'Black Violin' Is Redefining Classical Music

My 13-year-old son has been learning to play the violin and double bass over the past couple of years. Like any kid studying classical music, he gets frustrated and bored with it from time to time. I was the same way with piano lessons. My son even talks of quitting, but I don’t want him to give up on anything that he so clearly can master. But I understand that music written hundreds of years ago rarely holds the same appeal for a teenager how something more contemporary does. I think I may have found a way to inspire my young musician.

Black Violin is a hip hop duo from Florida, but there’s something very different about Kev Marcus (Kevin Sylvester) and Wil B (Wilner Baptiste). They’re both classically-trained string instrumentalists. Kev Marcus plays the violin and Wil B plays the viola. They met in high school, went to different colleges, then later reconnected to redefine the way we hear both hip hop and classical music. In addition to the violin and viola, Black Violin performs to sell-out crowds with a percussionist and DJ on stage.

The video below is a great example of why Black Violin has become so popular. You can see them live at Knight Theater tonight (3/22) at 7:30 PM. Click here to find tickets.
