Here’s something to ponder on our nation’s 241st birthday: What makes one state more patriotic than another? Aren’t they all part of the United States of America, and don’t they all fly the star-spangled banner on the Fourth of July?

Financial services website WalletHub quantified the level of patriotism in each state based on thirteen criteria, including average number of military enlistees; veterans per 1,000 civilian adults; share of adults who voted in the 2016 presidential election; rates of volunteerism; and required civic education. As it turns out, both Carolinas are very red, white, and blue.
