October is not off to a good start. One of rock & roll’s true greats, Tom Petty, passed away at the age of 66 on Monday (10/2). He had been taken to a Southern California hospital Sunday night after being found unconscious and in cardiac arrest at his Malibu home. Once doctors determined that brain activity had ceased, Petty’s family made the painful decision to remove him from life support.

Tom Petty recently finished his 40th anniversary tour with the Heartbreakers. I saw him in concert once back in 1994 and it was an outstanding show. I’m kicking myself for not traveling to one of this year’s tour stops. Petty wrote so many memorable songs over the past four decades. These are some of my favorites:

10. Refugee (1979)

9. Don’t Come Around Here No More (1985)

8. I Need To Know (1978)

7. Wildflowers (1994)

6. You Wreck Me (1994)

5. Runnin’ Down a Dream (1989)

4. Breakdown (1976)

3. I Won’t Back Down (1989)

2. Don’t Do Me Like That (1979)

1. American Girl (1976)

…and one more because I always felt The Traveling Wilburys* (Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne) were underappreciated:

*End of the Line (1989)
