Where is Santa Claus from? Most people would say the North Pole, but hold your reindeer! It turns out that the Jolly Ol’ Elf has some pretty strong ties to the Big Apple, which could explain his fondness for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
The image of Santa that we’ve come to know and love may have been inspired by St. Nicholas of Turkey and Holland’s Sinterklaas, but he really came into his own thanks to a couple of 19th Century New Yorkers: Clement Clarke Moore, who wrote A Visit from St. Nicholas (‘Twas the Night Before Christmas), and cartoonist Thomas Nast.
