The U.S. is still very much a nation of people seeking opportunities for success, and sometimes that means we have to move to find them. According to United Van Lines' National Movers Study, which tracks Americans' moving patterns over the past year, those opportunities must be in the South and West. The one anomaly is Vermont, which is #1 on the list for 2017. Both Carolinas are also in the top ten but we could have told United Vans Lines that, based on our worsening traffic.

Moving To:

  1. Vermont
  2. Oregon
  3. Idaho
  4. Nevada
  5. South Dakota
  6. Washington
  7. South Carolina
  8. North Carolina
  9. Colorado
  10. Alabama

Perhaps life isn't all that rosy in the Northeast and Midwest. Americans left those regions more than any other in 2017. I know from experience that taxes are much higher in many northern states which could explain the exodus. That, and the snow.

Moving From:

  1. Illinois
  2. New Jersey
  3. New York
  4. Connecticut
  5. Kansas
  6. Massachusetts
  7. Ohio
  8. Kentucky
  9. Utah
  10. Wisconsin
