Nothing could be finer than a summer road trip in North Carolina. Well, almost nothing. Only Wyoming ranked ahead of the Tar Heel State on WalletHub’s 2018 ranking of the best states for summer road trips, but we feel that it’s open to debate.

Starting from Charlotte, you can drive west to explore the quaint towns of the foothills, artsy Asheville, and the majestic mountains along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Head to the east and you can hit the vibrant cities of the Triad (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point) and the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill) before reaching North Carolina’s exquisite coastline. Good luck finding a beach in Wyoming.

Nearby Virginia also ranks high on WalletHub’s list, which is based on number of attractions, quality of roads, and overall travel cost. Here are the top fifteen:

  1. Wyoming
  2. North Carolina
  3. Minnesota
  4. Texas
  5. Florida
  6. Louisiana
  7. Washington
  8. New York
  9. Utah
  10. Colorado
  11. Oregon
  12. California
  13. Illinois
  14. Virginia
  15. South Dakota
