When Life Hands You Lemons, Put On Squeaky Shoes
You know the old saying “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.” When I first heard that as a kid, I wondered what people who didn’t like lemonade were supposed to do. Then I learned not to take things so literally.
Ella Fitzgerald famously sang, “Into each life some rain must fall.” The question is, what do you do to dry off? In other words, how do you overcome the negative circumstances that, inevitably, we all encounter from time to time?
The older I get, the better I am at recognizing when I need help with a problem. Of course, some problems can’t be solved easily, but our reactions and attitudes toward those problems can be adjusted. Exercise usually helps to improve my outlook. So does talking to my wife.
Sometimes it’s not anything we do intentionally that pulls us out of whatever it is that has us mired. And sometimes it can be the simplest thing, like the sound of squeaky shoes on our feet, that restores our spirit. The little girl in the video below serves as a great reminder to 1) not take oneself too seriously, and 2) always be receptive to life’s little pleasures.
