America’s biggest drug problem isn’t on the streets, it is in our medicine cabinets… Approximately 70% of those who abuse prescription medications get them from family or friends. Every 15 minutes, one American dies from an unintentional drug overdose, mostly due to prescription drugs. Unintentional drug overdose is now the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S. 1 in 4 teens reports having misused or abused prescription drugs at least once in their life. This is a 33% increase over the past 5 years. By survey, almost 50% of teens believe that taking prescription drugs is much safer than using illegal street drugs. What is not known by most of these young people is the risk they are taking by consuming these highly potent and mind-altering drugs. Long-term use of painkillers can lead to dependence, even for people who are prescribed them to relieve a medical condition but eventually fall into the trap of abuse and addiction.
