I was doing some Christmas shopping on Saturday and actually heard non-Christmas music. Apparently, not every store got the memo. What I did hear was one of the all-time greatest mood-setting songs. You know what I mean.

Send the kids to the movies, light a fire, get the good wine glasses out of the cupboard, no Two Buck Chuck tonight kind of music. And it was this song in particular:

Barry White. His nickname was "The Walrus of Love." His band was called The Love Unlimited Orchestra. Come on! If you heard "Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up" playing in your parents' bedroom, you knew you were getting a baby brother or sister in nine months.

That song was released in 1973. Do you know what else hit the radio in '73?

What??? Thanks to Marvin Gaye and Barry White, the summer of 1973 is still the steamiest on record. There's your global warming!

But this got me thinking that if Barry and Marvin are fire starters, which songs are musical fire extinguishers? I've narrowed them down to three finalists:

1. The Benny Hill Show Theme ("Yakety Sax" by Boots Randolph)

2. The Meow Mix jingle

3. "She Bangs" by William Hung

Which one is the biggest mood-killer? Can you think of any others?

Phil Harris is 50% of "Phil & Mel in the Afternoon" on K104.7. He has been with the station since 2013 and on the air in Charlotte since 2000. Before coming to the Queen City, Phil worked for radio stations in Pittsburgh, Austin, and Seattle. In addition to the weekly "Throwback Threesome" music video feature, Phil writes about things that matter to Charlotte sports fans and pet owners. He happens to be both.
