Former Monkees Bassist Peter Tork Has Died
Oh how I loved “The Monkees”television show! I used to watch the reruns all the time as a kid. I had a big ole crush on Davey Jones and on Peter Tork. I think lots of us have fond memories of The Monkees and their songs.
Sadly, Peter Tork passed away yesterday at the age of 77 in Connecticut. His son, Ivan Iannoli, said the cause of Peter’s death was complications from a rare form of cancer that was first diagnosed in 2009.
The Monkees were a manufactured band, created by Hollywood producers in the 1960s to capitalize on the popularity of the Beatles. All the members of the band had musical talent though. No one really thought The Monkees would become as popular as they did. The show won an Emmy award, and they had numerous hit records.
I wasn’t born until 1970, years after The Monkees became popular, but I watched reruns of the show as a kid. I had pictures in my room of Davey Jones and Peter Tork that I got out of “Teen Beat” magazine. I was lucky enough to see the band perform live in the late 1980’s.
This celebrity death made me nostalgic. I feel like a big part of my childhood has passed away. You can read more about Peter Tork and his life here.
