Archie and Edith and George and Weezy are coming back! All In The Family and its spinoff, The Jeffersons, are returning to primetime network TV for one night only. Late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel and renowned television producer Norman Lear (above) are teaming up for a 90-minute live tribute to the classic sitcoms, airing May 22nd at 8pm on ABC.

The tribute will feature recreations of two memorable episodes. Woody Harrelson and Marisa Tomei will play Archie and Edith Bunker. Jamie Foxx and Wanda Sykes will portray George and Louise Jefferson. Will Ferrell (Tom Willis), Ellie Kemper (Gloria Stivic), and Justina Machado (Florence Johnston) will also appear in the network special.

Given the current state of race relations in America, the timing of this couldn’t be better. Norman Lear’s creations not only entertained multiple generations of viewers with timeless comedy, but both shows also presented strong social and political commentary, much of which rings as true today as it did in the 1970s and ’80s. Of course, it might be impossible to launch a new TV show now featuring a character as politically incorrect as Archie Bunker.
