Well that didn’t take long. After shutting down last year, and amid a swirl of rumors about a possible return, Toys ‘R’ Us is on track to reopen in time for the 2019 holiday shopping season.
Former Toys ‘R’ Us executive Richard Barry, doing business as Tru Kids Brands, is preparing to launch a retail website and several physical locations in the U.S. this fall. The new stores will be about 10,000 square feet, which is roughly one-third the size of the old Toys ‘R’ Us locations.
Barry has said he’s confident the new plan will work because no other retailer has filled the gap left after Toys ‘R’ Us shut down in March of 2018. Target offers a small but popular selection of toys and games in their stores, and even more online. And, of course, Amazon is still out there.
Can the new Toys ‘R’ Us make a successful comeback? Will customers return to brick-and-mortar stores when everything is available online? What will Geoffrey the Giraffe’s role be in all of this? So many questions…
