There are lots of places in Charlotte where you can feast on a frank: Green’s Lunch, Matt’s Chicago Dog, Vic the Chili Man, Mojo’s, JJ’s Red Hots, Park Road Soda Shoppe, and of course, BB&T Ballpark. There are also plenty of acceptable ways to top your tube steak. I use the word ‘acceptable’ because I once saw someone put mayonnaise on a hot dog. That is not an acceptable topping. Sorry.
Here’s how I rank the best ways to top a hot dog:
1. Mustard
2. Carolina-style: chili and cole slaw
3. Onions
4. Sauerkraut
5. Relish
6. Chicago-style: yellow mustard, chopped white onions, sweet pickle relish, dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, pickled sport peppers, celery salt.
7. Cheese
8. Salsa
9. Bacon
10. Ketchup
11. Mac & Cheese (Better than you’d think!)
