I first saw Abigail Spencer on “Suits” as Scotty, a former love interest to Harvey Spectre. The next time I saw her, she had her own series on NBC called “Timeless”, and even though it only lasted one season, I was hooked on Abigail Spencer. “Timeless” fans were so rabid about the cancellation that NBC felt compelled to come back with a 2 hour Christmas finale to close all the loop holes and cliff hangers and give fans an ending. Don’t be surprised if “Timeless” returns on USA, SyFy, Netflix or some other streaming service. But I digress.
I binged “Reprisal” across the weekend and the 10 episodes left me wanting Season 2 ASAP because it was that good!
The story takes place in and around Detroit and the midwest even though Wilmington, N.C. was where it was filmed. When it takes place is another question entirely. 50’s hot rods, vinyl records and neon dominate the sets of “Reprisal” but there are a few cell phones, but all are the flip variety. The TV sets look 5o to 60-ish as well and creator Josh Corbin is careful to be vague.
Characters in this story even fought in a war to save The Archipelago. Could Josh Corbin give any more misdirection. An archipelago is an island chain or grouping of islands. Could be anywhere in the world. Further evidence that the writer and director is placing focus on the story rather than the place or the time.
In the opening episode you see that this is about “gang life” circa “West Side Story” but this ain’t a musical. The “Banished Brawlers” are the lead gang in the story and there are smaller gangs around, notably “The Ghouls” and these two have a running feud. Burt Harlow is the leader of the Brawlers and in the first 5 minutes, you see him and a few more members kill several of their own to try and pin it on the “Ghouls” to force a war. Somehow, and this becomes the center point of the story, Katherine Harlow (Abigail Spencer) is blamed for betraying the “Banished Brawlers” and is dragged behind a pickup truck by her brother Burt and his cohorts where she is left for dead.
Title says “Some years later” and Katherine has survived, changed her name, gotten married and has revenge in her heart! Now you’re set up for a tale of “Reprisal”. An excellent cast of new faces and a few familiar ones like Ron Perlman make this a must watch for fans who aren’t squeamish and know that “Revenge is a dish best served cold”!
