Never throw away a lottery ticket until you’re absolutely, positively, 100% sure it’s not a winner. That’s the lesson a South Carolina man learned after almost missing out on a six-figure jackpot.

The unnamed lottery player bought a Palmetto Cash 5 ticket for the January 24th drawing at a gas station in Newberry, about 40 miles northwest of Columbia. After checking the lottery numbers, he thought he had lost and tossed the ticket into the trash. But there was one problem. He was looking at the results for the day before. In the immortal words of Homer Simpson, “D’OH!”

Later, the man happened to see the correct day’s numbers and realized the awful mistake he had made. Luckily, he was still able to find the ticket in the garbage and claim his prize — $100,000. Perhaps sensing how fortunate he really was, the man said he would donate some of his winnings to charity and use the rest to set up college funds for his grandchildren.
