Amazon Prime Video “Hunters” Worth Your Time
I’ve always been a fan of “period” pieces. Films set in a time gone by or a future time imagined. “Hunters”, the newest offering in original programming by Amazon Prime Video gives you two period pieces in one series.
The “Hunters” are Jews that are hunting the Nazi’s who terrorized them and killed their people during the Holocaust. In order to setup this particular story, you get plenty of Nazi Germany and the camps like Auschwitz via flashbacks. In this telling, post war America, rather than let German scientists get into Russian hands, offer them asylum in the U.S. to help us grow our technology. It seems it was the Nazi’s that got us to the moon and now all these war criminals have new identities in America while plotting the return of the 4th Reich.
Al Pacino is brilliant as holocaust survivor, Meyer Opperman, who leads his group of extremists to hunt down and kill these Nazi’s by any means necessary. The second period of this story takes place in the 70’s New York City and the nightmares are still very fresh just 30 years after the war.
Executive produced by Jordan Peele (“Get Out”, “US”) this tale has several moments that will have you going…”Whoa…did that just happen”? Certainly a subject like the holocaust is as heavy as any could be, but this series does find a way to interject some “tongue in cheek” moments. Featuring some great character acting by Saul Rubinek and Carole Kane, the cast is superb and the twists and turns will keep you hanging until the closing scene of episode 10. The 70’s costumes and the way things are presented will remind you of films like, “Shaft” and “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka”. Music from the 70’s enhances right down to the scratches on the vinyl. ***** Five Stars on this one. Trust me, the Nun turned Nazi Hunter is one of the highlights.
