Working From Home Doesn’t Always Mean Working In Your Underwear
The coronavirus pandemic has shut down our office so, while Mel and I are still coming in to do the morning show, most of our co-workers are working from home. Many people around the world are doing the same but may still need to conduct face-to-face meetings via Skype, Zoom, or some other video conferencing app. That means you still have to make an effort regarding your appearance. Here are some ways to look your Monday morning best when you’re on the webcam:
Hair and makeup – At the very least, you should comb your hair and shave (if applicable). Women and men both find that a little under-eye concealer goes a long way toward hiding those dark circles after a late night of quarantine binge watching. The TV pros also suggest using translucent powder to hide any glare on your face.
Wardrobe – Put on a clean shirt, blouse, or sweater before interfacing with the client in Dusseldorf. You can be more casual below the waist since no one will see what kind of pants, if any, you might be wearing. TV news anchors have long been known to wear jeans or shorts with their suit jackets and ties while sitting behind a desk.
Lighting – You probably don’t have professional studio lighting in your home, so natural light is your best option. Celebrity makeup artist Nam Vo recommends facing a window. If it’s dark outside, put a light directly behind your computer. Overhead lights create dark shadows and lighting from below can give you a double chin.
Setting up the shot – If you want to give the impression that you’re in an office, point the camera at a blank wall with a couple of simple props like a plant or some artwork so it’s not a totally empty space. Try to keep house clutter out of view. Also, keep your camera at eye-level and frame your head and shoulders in the shot.
