Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox met in 1975 at a London restaurant where she was working. Within ten years, they were among the biggest acts in pop and rock as Eurythmics.
The dynamic duo released their fourth studio album, Be Yourself Tonight, in 1985. It was a departure from their synth-pop roots to sound that incorporated more elements of rock and R&B. The biggest single from that album was the upbeat funk rock hit “Would I Lie To You?” It went to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and all the way up to #2 on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart.
The video begins with Dave Stewart and the band waiting in their nightclub dressing room for Annie Lennox, who is running very late. She arrives on the back of her boyfriend’s motorcycle, and the two are clearly not getting along. The boyfriend is played by actor Steven Bauer, whom you might recognize as ‘Manny Ribera’ in Scarface.
Once on stage, Annie forgets her romantic troubles by losing herself in the song. Eurythmics are supported by a tight horn section, fantastic backup singers, and a helpful audience which quickly dispatches Annie’s unworthy boyfriend.
