Johnson C. Smith University Cancels Homecoming and Commencement Activities

Not a surprise to some, but Charlotte’s Johnson C. Smith University has canceled plans to have in-person homecoming activities and commencement exercises due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The private college made the announcement Tuesday.
JCSU President Clarence Armbrister said he and his team looked at the data for COVID-19 in North Carolina and it wasn’t wise to have in-person homecoming activities in the fall. He says for that reason, he also canceled commencement exercises that were scheduled for October 28.
Armbrister emphasized the need to keep students, staff, and families safe with the goal to minimize the spread of COVID-19.
Despite the cancellation of homecoming activities, there will still be a homecoming football game at JCSU. It is scheduled for Saturday, October 31. The athletic staff at the school and JCSU administration are talking with the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) to determine attendance plans.
