Trekkies take their passion seriously. Whether it's any one of the television series or the movies, true "Star Trek" fans know that exploring the final frontier is no laughing matter. Well, until now, that is.

Variety reports that CBS All Access has released the official trailer for its new animated comedy, "Star Trek: Lower Decks." The weekly 10-episode series, which has already been renewed for a second season, debuts on the streaming service August 6th.

The half-hour series is about the support crew serving on one of Starfleet's least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos, in the year 2380. The characters juggle their work and social lives while the starship is besieged by one interplanetary challenge after another. Here's a peek:

This isn't the first time the "Star Trek" franchise has been seen in cartoon form. “Star Trek: The Animated Series” aired for two seasons from 1973 to 1974. And there's more to come. An animated series based on "Section 31" and a CG-animated “Star Trek” series for younger audiences are being developed for Nickelodeon.
