Suffice it to say that 2020 has “SUCKED”! Our mundane existence that we’d LOVE to have back right now was turned upside down from COVID-19. As vacation time neared, once it was evident that there would be a vacation , my family contemplated going to the same place we had vacationed for years in S.C. or opt for something we felt safer about. Our stomping grounds have always been the North Myrtle Beach area of the Grand Strand, but after seeing photos and personal accounts from friends of the big crowds, no masks, little to no social distancing and what we perceived as “reckless” behavior from S.C. leadership, we searched for a quieter place where we felt safer.
We settled on Surf City, N.C. on Topsail Island north of Wilmington. Using VRBO (Vacation Rental By Owner) we found a place right on the beach called “Turtles Nest” (turtles are protected by city ordinances there). Being in N.C., meant mandated mask wearing and we felt safer shopping for groceries and supplies while there. There were numerous families around us, but everyone stayed to themselves and followed the rules of social distancing. After 4pm each afternoon this was our view and it turned out to be a wonderful vacation.
The experience was so positive that we may go again next year. Here’s my point. We humans are creatures of habit and COVID-19 has changed our habits out of necessity, possibly forever. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Don’t be afraid to stand up for your concerns and fears when others “shame” you for not wanting to do “business as usual” when it’s anything BUT, business as usual.
