France Lifts Law Against Eating Lunch At Desk
Raise your hand if you ever eaten lunch at your desk. That’s what I thought…almost everyone. It’s very common for American workers to eat lunch in their offices or cubicles. Did you know that, until very recently, it was illegal to do that in France?
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the French law which banned people from having meals in the workplace has been temporarily lifted. Before this change, people in France were forced to actually take a lunch break.
CNN reports that the temporary relaxation in the law applies to businesses with more than 50 workers. Officials say the original laws were used to encourage socialization and people enjoying lunches at local eateries.
The good news for restaurants is that the ban will be put back in place once the pandemic is over. I imagine most French citizens will be happy to leave their desks at lunchtime as well. After all, dining out is looked upon as a sacred ritual in France.
