What Kind Of Noise Helps You Sleep?
Some people love the sound of rain when they go to bed. Others find crickets soothing and restful. Some city dwellers can’t fall asleep without hearing street traffic. And, of course, there’s always the white noise machine. But white noise isn’t the only color coded noise to help you drift off.
White is the most familiar of the noises. It’s a sound similar to a fan or air conditioner running. Then there’s pink noise. That sounds more like leaves rustling. Brown noise is the latest to make the scene, according to Bustle. It’s very bass-y and sounds kind of like a rumble of thunder, heavy rainfall, or a strong waterfall.
Dr. Naina Limbekar, a sleep neurologist at Boston Medical Center, explains that the colors are actually based on frequencies. White noise has a higher pitch and brown is much lower. She says brown noise gets its name from Robert Brown, a botanist who first discovered “Brownian motion,” which is a random particle motion.
As far as which one will help you fall asleep, that’s up to you. Everyone has a different preference and there are smartphone apps for all of those noises. Anything is better than listening to someone snoring!
