Throw a bottle opener anywhere in Charlotte and you’re likely to hit a brewery, brewpub, taproom or, at the very least, someone drinking a beer. Over the last twenty-one years, I’ve watched Charlotte become a major league beer town. It seems like another hops-fueled business opens just about every day. The Queen City loves beer and the rest of the country is noticing.

According to USA Today’s 10 Best, North Carolina has not one but two of the Best Beer Cities in America. Asheville is #3 on the list and Charlotte just cracked the top ten. The traditional brewing burgs of Milwaukee and St. Louis are also in the top ten but neither claimed the top spot.

For the third time, Grand Rapids, Michigan has been named the “Best Beer City.” Grand Rapids took the Readers’ Choice title again thanks in part to being home to the world-renowned Founders Brewing Co. as well as several other local brewers. They also boast a “Beer City Ale Trail” with more than 80 breweries in the surrounding area. Don’t be surprised if Charlotte catches up.
