It’s National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day And We Gotta Make This One
National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day is always on April 12th and it recognizes one of the top comfort foods in the United States. A staple of childhood was having a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup. A classic pairing!
To me, grilled cheese sandwiches always taste better when someone else makes them. My best friend Julie makes the best! If I have a grilled cheese sandwich at a restaurant, I always add pickles. I know lots of folks enjoy a fresh tomato slice on their grilled cheese. I don’t do this but I have heard that getting the bread perfectly toasty requires mayo on the outside of both pieces of bread.
As for the classic American grilled cheese, the sandwich emerged in the 1920s when inexpensive cheese and affordable sliced bread became available. It’s now a staple in cafés, diners, and school cafeterias across the country.
When I was out recovering from neck surgery, my mom and I caught an episode of “The Pioneer Woman” on the Food Network. In this episode she made an amazing “adult” grilled cheese. We got to see most of the episode as you always wait a while at a doctor’s office. My mom and I planned to make it before she went back home, but we didn’t get the chance. I do believe I may have to make it today.
It’s Ree Drummond’s “Cheddar and Apple Grilled Cheese” that made us so hungry. Now usually, I’m not a fan of fruit on a sandwich but this looks good. It has bacon, onions, white cheddar, and Dijon mustard. Mayo is on the list of ingredients list, so I’m guessing Drummond is a fan of mayo on the bread prior to grilling.
This sandwich has so many flavors that seem like they would work well together. And it’s kinda healthy….there’s apple in between the bacon and the cheese and it’s on multi-grain bread. I do what I can to lie to myself. LOL!
Looking at this sandwich makes me hungry. If you’re interested in the recipe, you can find it here. I’ve made a few recipes that belong to “The Pioneer Woman” and they turned out quite tasty. I’ll take a pic of the sandwich I make tonight and let ya know how it is!
No matter what your favorite variety is, whip up a grilled cheese today and celebrate one of the best comfort foods.
