For the past few months now, downtown Concord has been in utter turmoil. A new courthouse annex is going up, the old city hall is being torn down to make way for an apartment building with a rooftop bar. As the Charlotte area booms, Downtown Concord is also exploding and very soon, a sidewalk expansion will make way for restaurants and shops to extend outside during business hours. Exciting stuff.
As I’m driving home last week, I notice trucks blocking Union Street in front of Union Street Bistro. The Bistro has been closed since Covid-19 began but due to construction, lane closures are common, so I didn’t think anything of it. As I drove by and looked over at the sidewalk and the Bistro, I did a quick double-take as what I saw was right off a New York City street.
Turns out it was the filming of scenes from “Are You There God?, it’s Me, Margaret”. The film is based on the book by Judy Blume published in 1970 and tells the story of a young girl whose parents are Christian and Jewish and who move from NYC to a small New Jersey town. Wikipedia page here for details on the book and author.
My son phoned me later in the day, saying that he drove through and saw Kathy Bates and Rachel McAdams standing on the sidewalk preparing to film. Pretty exciting stuff. My friend Laurie Miller, visited during one of the night shoots and was kind enough to share her photos with me. Enjoy. They also shot scenes in Charlotte and other spots in N.C.
