Every morning I wake up grateful for the day and wonder what strangeness is associated with it. (Yes, I admit I’m a different breed of human) Knowing major historical events is crucial to understanding how we live today. Seeing what happened in the past intrigues me.

• Ice Cream Sandwich Day

  Ice cream sandwich day is on August 2nd each year. Back in the 1900s, the original ice cream sandwich was sold for only a penny from a pushcart in Bowery, New york. By 1940, grocers sold sandwiches made with crispy wafers and now we can enjoy delicious ice cream sandwiches anywhere we go. It's hot enough for it so enjoy one if you can!

• Welcome the Penny to the U.S.A. Line of Coins

  On August 2, 1909, the very first Lincoln Head Penny was issued. This was the first U.S. coin to depict an actual person. As a result, the penny was being sold as high as 25* each when initially released to the public. This was because so many people wanted one. The original penny included the designer's initials on the back which were later removed. Complaints were also made that the OG penny was a little too thick to work in current vending machines. Funny enough, this issue was never changed. In fact, vending machines had to be adjusted in order to accommodate the penny's thickness.

• Wild Bill Hickok was Shot Dead

  Poker wasn't such a lucky game for this man. On August 2, 1876, Wild Bill Hickok was shot in the back of the head and killed during a poker game. He was reportedly holding two pair, a black ace and a black eight. This is now known as the "dead man's hand." An eary fact about this event was that Hickok's seat was out of the norm for this day. He usually sat with his back to a wall so he could see the entrance, but when he joined the game the only seat available was facing away from the door. He had asked another man to change seats with him but was refused. It was some bad luck all around.
