My cancer was detected early, so I got lucky! Self-exams are an important part of staying healthy and so are yearly mammograms. I felt nothing and had no clue something was wrong. A yearly mammogram detected my cancer early, so make sure you make an appointment asap!
A woman who beat breast cancer has developed an app to help people do self-exams. Jessica Baladad found a lump thanks to a self-check, and she's developed the Feel For Your Life app to help others. The app is described as the "easiest online platform for learning about your options for doing self breast exams". The app also helps you develop screening routines and understanding your risks for breast cancer.
Breast cancer doesn't run in my family, so I didn't think I was at risk. I was wrong! Usually a mammogram is recommended for women after the age of 40, but the disease can affect anyone, at any age. Baladad found a lump while in college that turned out to be benign. She continued monthly self checks and found another lump at the age of 33, which turned out to be breast cancer. Baladad went through chemo and radiation, as well as a double mastectomy. She's alive today because of a self check and wants to help others stay safe.
The app lets you track and monitor progress and sends you a reminder when it's time for a self exam. Whether you use an app or write it on your calendar, please make sure to self check. And if it's time for your mammogram, get in there and get it done. It can truly safe your life.
