I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Well, unless you’re on a vegan diet. Then it gets a little trickier. But, according to Spectrum News, North Carolina now has its first all-vegan ice cream shop.
Theodore Chatfield has launched Vegan Ice Cream Man, which began operating in September out of a food truck in Chapel Hill. Chatfield grew up helping his grandmother with her ice cream cart business. After he went vegan in his 30s, Chatfield had trouble finding high quality non-dairy alternatives. You know the old saying, “necessity is the mother of invention.”
Chatfield got Vegan Ice Cream Man off the ground after his limousine business went under during the pandemic. He now offers 21 plant-based, dairy-free, egg-free, coconut-free, soy-free flavors. The menu includes Cookies & Cream, S’mores, and Peanut Butter Chocolate Swirl.
So far, the reaction from customers has been positive. Chatfield says he hopes to get his product in stores and restaurants in the near future. In the meantime, you can visit the Vegan Ice Cream Man at 102 S. Merritt Mill Road in Chapel Hill.
