CP54/ShutterstockI've been to a lot of sporting events in my life. I've seen players get ejected from games for all sorts of reasons. But I don't think I've ever seen one get ejected for being too drunk to play. And I know I've never seen an official get ejected for any reason. Until now.
According to Yahoo! Sports, baseball umpire Huberto Saiz had to be removed from the field during a Mexican Pacific League matchup after his fellow officials believed he was intoxicated. What led them to make that assumption about Saiz? It could have been the fact that the umpire was flipping off the fans as he was walking to first base.
The drunk ump did not want to leave the game and had to be escorted off the field by four men. Saiz has since apologized for his actions, saying, “Dear fans, managers, umpires, journalists of the Mexican Pacific League and of course my wife and children I feel sorry and ashamed of what happened. I am clear that I must respect the noble fans since I should not make gestures or to players and fans I not only committed an unworthy act for me, but this is undeservedly extended to my colleagues in the profession and to the Mexican Pacific League that always gave me confidence and I was not a worthy trustee in this situation.”
An ice cold beer at the ballpark is one of life's simple pleasures. However, if you have any say in the outcome of the game, maybe stick to Gatorade until after the last out has been called. You can see the Twitter thread with videos below.
