Crows Are Being Trained To Pick Up Cigarette Butts
A town in Sweden is training wild crows to pick up and properly dispose of cigarette butts to help keep the streets clean. The Keep Sweden Tidy Foundation’s ‘Corvid Cleaning’ project in Södertälje is teaching the crows to drop the butts into a device that dispenses food every time they put one inside.
According to the Daily Mail, the town of Södertälje currently spends over $2 million a year on street cleaning. The project’s founder says that is six times what it will cost to use trained crows. The Keep Sweden Tidy Foundation also expects to train other birds to use the food dispensing machines as well.
Sweden isn’t the only country putting birds to work. In 2018, six crows were trained to pick up cigarette butts at the Puy du Fou theme park in France. It’s impressive. I can hardly get my dog to sit. You can see the crows in action below:
