North Carolina Church Provides Free Prom Dresses & Suits For Teens
Prom can be one of the most magical nights of teenagers’ lives. Getting the chance to get dressed up and live like a princess or prince. But for some, affording that perfect dress may be an undue hardship for families. And even if you have the money, it can be hard to justify spending hundreds on a dress you’ll wear once. Plus that’s not the only expense- there’s hair, makeup, nails, dinner, limos. The cost of one night can add up quickly. But one North Carolina church has been helping to make teens who need free prom dresses can access them.
It’s called Lydia’s Loft Prom Closet and it’s a self-funded ministry housed in the old education building of the First Baptist Church of Huntersville. Lydia’s Loft started in 2010. Since then, thousands of young ladies and young men in North Carolina have received free prom dresses or suits. In 2019 the Prom Closet gave out 1,282 dresses to local teens, and with the return of proms, they hope to help even more this season.
How To Get A Dress or Donate
The Prom Closet is Saturdays from 9:00 am – 12:00 noon in the Education Building. You can also make an appointment to shop during the week. Appointments to shop for a dress can be made by emailing [email protected]. The dresses are completely free! And the selection is vast. I had the opportunity to walk through the Prom Closet last week and it feels like a typical shopping experience. Guests can browse multiple rooms full of dresses in a wide variety of sizes. There are also accessories such as jewelry, shoes, purses, and more. Once you’ve found dresses you’re interested in there are multiple dressing rooms so you can try them on and find that perfect one.
If you have a prom dress you would like to donate, you may leave it in the collection bin located in the covered breezeway outside the Education Building entrance (behind the Sanctuary); volunteers will keep an eye on the bin and bring donations inside periodically.
