SAN FRANCISCO - MAY 07: Gas prices over $3.50 per gallon are seen at a service station May 7, 2007 in San Francisco, California. Gas prices reached a record national average price of $3.07 per gallon of regular unleaded, up over twenty cents in the past two weeks. DoorDash is the latest to pay drivers extra amid soaring gas prices.

CNBC is reporting that the delivery service has started a program to give Dashers 10-percent cashback when they fill up using the company’s debit card. Those who drive the most miles will also get weekly bonuses.

Here’s a pleasant surprise: customers won’t be hit with higher fees to make this happen. Meanwhile, Uber and Lyft are both charging customers a fuel surcharge. As of yesterday, Triple-A’s nationwide average gas price is four-30 a gallon for regular. That’s down a penny from yesterday. Prices are still highest in California, where a gallon of regular is going for five-77.

This isn’t the first time we have experienced mass shortages. According to NCJustice.Org, North Carolina ranks number 10th in the nation for hunger. There are nearly 590,000 households in North Carolina that do not have enough food to eat each day. North Carolina has the 10th highest rate of food insecurity in the nation and the pandemic is not helping fix this massive issue.

If you’ve been to any grocery store lately you will see it is sad to say but the shelves are looking rather bare. Many grocery stores across North Carolina continue to offer empty shelves and higher prices. I went last week and my favorite energy drink that used to be $2 a can is now $4.
