May is “National Mental Health Awareness” month. There are so many of us that struggle on a daily basis. I’ve dealt with depression and anxiety since I was a teen. Of course in the 80’s, it wasn’t something you talked about. And you certainly weren’t medicated. At least I wasn’t. I did what many people do and used alcohol to deal with my emotions. I was a teen and didn’t know any better.
Now things are different, and the stigma of mental illness is not as it was in the 80’s. That said, there is still a stigma and there’s definitely not enough mental health help in our country. You can help out locally next weekend.
The Cabarrus County Affiliate NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Health) is holding a huge yard sale on Saturday, May 21, from 7 am to 1 pm. It will be in Harrisburg at 4815 NC Hwy 49. I know folks around here LOVE a good yard sale, so get out and do some shopping for a good cause.
All proceeds from the event will go directly to NAMI Cabarrus to support those with mental illness and their family members.
Just word from me: I’ve been in that dark hole of depression. I’ve felt alone and helpless. I’ve tried to give up, and luckily I’m still here. And if you feel that way, please reach out to a friend, a family member or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. I promise you that you can come out the other side and see some light.
