They call him “Jaws” because that’s what made him famous. Joey Chestnut and his lightning-fast jaws won his fifteenth Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest on Monday. Despite limping onto the stage in Coney Island with a foot injury (as if that would have mattered) and being interrupted by a protestor, Chestnut easily defeated his opponents by inhaling 63 hot dogs and buns in ten minutes at the annual event. On the women’s side, former champ Miki Sudo, who skipped last year’s event because she was pregnant, won by scarfing down 40 franks.

Although Chestnut’s count of 63 was more than enough to earn him a victory on Monday, it falls short of his record of 76, which he set during last year’s competition. Sudo also fell short of her record of 48 1/2 hot dogs, set in 2020. No matter. Both of their achievements this and every year are impressive and difficult to duplicate, which is why I tune in to watch.

Hot dogs weren’t the only thing being devoured in dramatic fashion on the Fourth of July. Prior to the Hot Dog Eating Contest, Eric “Badlands” Booker won his second consecutive Nathan’s Lemonade Chugging Contest. According to USA Today, he guzzled a gallon of lemonade in under thirty seconds. That particular event has only been held twice, so Booker owns it completely.

A Key West man is also celebrating after being crowned the Key Lime Pie-Eating Champion. CBS Miami reports that Chris Schultz put away a nine-inch key lime pie in a minute and 14 seconds yesterday to win the annual Key Lime Pie Eating Championship in the U.S.’s southernmost city. Shultz defeated 24 other entrants in the Key West Independence Day tradition. Contestants were not allowed to use forks, spoons, or their hands.
