Did You Know A ‘Free McDonald’s For Life’ Card Existed?
Consider my mind blown. The New York Post reports that the late Regis Philbin had something a lot of people would covet. The TV personality, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 88, was the proud owner of a “Free McDonald’s For Life” card. Whoa.
This revelation comes from Philbin’s son-in-law, Mike Schur, who played Dwight Schrute’s cousin, Mose, on The Office, and was co-creator of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Parks and Recreation. He has been married to Regis’ daughter, television writer and producer J.J. Philbin, since 2005.
Schur says that sometime in the ’90s, Philbin received a gold-colored card that said ‘This card entitles Regis Philbin to free McDonald’s for life.” Apparently, Regis wasn’t scared to show off his card and used it whenever he would travel with his daughter when she was a kid.
Unfortunately, the card never really worked for Regis because, like me, most McDonald’s employees weren’t aware that such a card existed. Schur says Philbin would simply pay for his food rather than complicate things for the fast food workers. It’s not like he couldn’t afford it, but that didn’t stop him for trying.
If you could have a “free for life” card, what would it be? I recently read that Ben & Jerry’s have an “Ice Cream for Life Club.” They started it as a way to pay certain people when the company was just starting out and didn’t have much money. That would be a good club to be in. I think I could also go for a “Free Coffee For Life” card from some big national chain.
