You loved it during the Winter Olympics; now try it for yourself! Our friends at Charlotte Curling are inviting the public to experience the sport of curling with them. Before the start of their fall season, Charlotte Curling will host eleven "Learn To Curl" events in September as they continue to grow this fun sport by introducing and educating anyone who's interested.

"Learn To Curls" are a great way to try the age-old sport of curling, which is accessible to most ages and ability levels. The sport has even been adapted for athletes in wheelchairs. You'll be shown the basics and intricacies of curling, as well as experience the camaraderie of the sport. Curling really does make for a fun afternoon or evening out. These introductory events will happen from Friday, September 9th through Saturday, September 17th.

The two-hour "Learn To Curl" sessions include on-ice instruction of rock delivery, sweeping, and strategy from Charlotte Curling's dedicated members. After some time to practice these skills, you'll form teams and play an end or two. Then you'll gather in the warm room for the post-game tradition of "broomstacking." That's the curling term for having a drink with your teammates and opponents. Charlotte Curling has a full bar featuring various local craft beers.

Charlotte Curling is located at 6525 Old Statesville Road, Charlotte, NC 28269. Registration for the "Learn To Curl" events is $30 for weeknight sessions; $40 for sessions on Fridays and weekends. You can get more information and sign up HERE. And here's a look back at when Mel and I tried curling for the first time:

Phil Harris is 50% of "Phil & Mel in the Afternoon" on K104.7. He has been with the station since 2013 and on the air in Charlotte since 2000. Before coming to the Queen City, Phil worked for radio stations in Pittsburgh, Austin, and Seattle. In addition to the weekly "Throwback Threesome" music video feature, Phil writes about things that matter to Charlotte sports fans and pet owners. He happens to be both.
