‘Slowpoke’ Drivers Could Pay Expensive Fines In South Carolina
At least once a week, Phil has to hear me complain about traffic. Living in Gastonia, I deal with lots of traffic twice a day. More than twice a week I deal with someone driving slow in the left lane on I 85. Coming out of Gastonia, from the New Hope Road ramp onto I 85 through Belmont, someone is always driving slow in the left lane. It’s frustrating! In South Carolina, if you’re a slowpoke driving in the left lane, you can face some hefty fines.
According to WBTV, the bill was advanced by a Senate subcommittee on Tuesday and is now going to the Senate Transportation Committee. The fine could be raised from $25 up to $100. Lawmakers first passed the Slowpoke Bill in 2021, and last year South Carolina State Troopers wrote roughly 500 tickets.
In S.C., the law requires drivers in the left lane to move over if a car comes up behind them and the right lane is clear. If you’re caught driving slow in the left lane and don’t move over, you can be fined.
We need this in North Carolina! Driving slow in the left lane and backing up traffic is not only annoying, but it can cause accidents. And if you drive on I 85, I 77, or I 485, there are enough problems already! Charlotte and all of the surrounding cities are growing fast. The traffic is getting crazy! We don’t need slow folks causing more of a ruckus!
Gastonia has really grown. Getting home at night is a challenge at times. Sometimes it takes me 45 minutes to get home, sometimes over an hour. Twice last year it took me around two hours to get home. Nuts!
I’m all about a law like this here in N.C. I think it would help traffic be a bit less congested.
