Should North Carolina Be Concerned With Water After Ohio Spill?
Should North Carolinians be concerned with our water after the Ohio Spill? Everyone is aware of the huge train crash in Ohio last month. Multiple train cars derailed and it turned into what’s being called a “chemical disaster” in East Palestine, Ohio.
Because of this incident, the people of Charlotte have jumped on social media with concerns about water quality. Great news! Mecklenburg County officials say the water is safe and the Ohio spill can’t reach its waterways at all! Even if it did we have many systems in place to alert officials of chemicals in our rivers and lakes.
Streams and lakes around the Charlotte area are tested daily for contaminants as a safety measure also.
While the environmental catastrophe in Ohio is causing concern locally and nationwide we don’t have to worry. That’s what Rusty Rozzelle, the manager of Mecklenburg County’s Water Quality Program, told WCNC Charlotte. Rozzelle said it’s “physically impossible” for the chemicals to hit North Carolina waterways.
“Our water does not flow from Ohio here,” Rozzelle said, “it is in the Mississippi River Basin and it flows from the mountains, east or west, not the other way.”
