The phrase “spring break travel destinations” usually conjures up some predictable images. Mostly beaches, right? But that’s not necessarily the case, according to Airbnb. The vacation rental company has revealed its top-trending destinations for spring and there are a few surprises.
Have you ever heard a college kid say, “Hey, let’s go to Indianapolis for spring break”? Me neither, but the Circle City is indeed one of Airbnb’s most-searched cities that aren’t what we usually think of as spring break destinations. Sports could explain why some cities made the list. A couple of them are hosting major events this spring. Augusta, Georgia is the home of the Masters golf tournament and Kansas City, Missouri is the site of this year’s NFL Draft.
Airbnb’s list does include more typical spring break destinations, such as Tampa and St. Petersburg; Virginia Beach; and, for the skiers, Steamboat Springs, Colorado. One town in South Carolina that my family and I happen to love is also trending: North Myrtle Beach. Some folks still refer to North Myrtle Beach by its older name, Cherry Grove. The northern-most beach town in South Carolina, North Myrtle Beach is the quieter cousin to the better-known, and more raucous, Myrtle Beach.
North Myrtle Beach has everything you need for a fun and relaxing vacation. The beach itself is clean and the town offers plenty of creature comforts to make your stay a pleasant one. There’s a fishing pier, lots of dining options, ice cream stands, souvenir shops, bike and surfboard rental, a hardware store, and a great grocery store called Boulineau’s IGA. And that’s just in old downtown Cherry Grove. Beyond that, you’ll find familiar chain stores and restaurants along Highway 17, as well as multiple golf courses. Don’t worry. There’s putt-putt, too. It is the beach, after all.
