Vending Machines In Japan Stocked With Wild Bear
Like many offices, ours has a bank of vending machines. Two are for beverages, one is for snacks. The machine that is stocked with food has the typical assortment of chips, pretzels, nuts, candy bars, gum, and pastries. Aside from the nuts, the only other source of protein you might find in there is some form of beef jerky. But if it’s exotic meat you’re craving, you need grab some yen and head to Japan.
According to the BBC, the Japanese city of Semboku is home to perhaps the most unique vending machine snack of all time: wild bear. More specifically, it’s locally-sourced bear meat from nearby mountains. Customers can choose between fatty and lean cuts for around $17 a pop.
There seems to be a limited supply of the succulent snack as the Japanese government caps the number of black bears that can be hunted at 12% of their population. However, if you want to continue down the “Fear Factor” food path, other Japanese vending machines also offer canned snails, insects, and whale meat.
30 Snacks and Other Food Items Banned in America
Food is an important part of defining culture, and the United States is no different. A country of seemingly endless gastronomic choices, the United States features local favorites like collard greens and cornbread as well as boxed macaroni and cheese. Despite this, some foods are practically impossible to find in the United States because they’re on the banned food list. But believe it or not, the United States doesn’t allow certain foods consumed around the world.
FDA sometimes prevents foods from crossing the border, but sometimes state laws or public opinion must intervene. Stacker has compiled a list of foods and beverages that have either been banned across the entire country, by certain states, or in schools. In some cases, these bans have made it nearly impossible to find these foods in the U.S.—at least not in the form in which they’re available throughout the rest of the world. From tasty cheeses to the famed Scottish dish haggis, these 30 foods aren’t welcome in America.
