Fortune Cookie Tweet Comes True For 2023 Masters Champion Jon Rahm
Jon Rahm won the iconic green jacket at Augusta National yesterday. The 2023 Masters champion probably slept in it last night. It’s the first green jacket for the 28-year-old Spaniard. It wouldn’t be at all surprising if he added a few more to his closet in the coming years.
Despite trouble with the weather and a couple of trees falling on the course, this year’s Masters Tournament offered a compelling showdown between Jon Rahm and 32-year-old Brooks Koepka. The two golfers had nearly identical scores over the first three rounds with Rahm shooting a 65, 69, and 73, and Koepka shooting a 65, 67, and 73.
The fourth round was the difference maker. Jon Rahm put significant distance over his closest competitors, shooting a -3 for the round and -12 for the tournament. Koepka shot +3 for the round and -8 for the tournament. Phil Mickelson put together an impressive final round with a -7 (65), which put him in a tie for second place with Koepka (-8) for the tourney.
In his victory speech, John Rahm acknowledged his family, friends, and longtime caddy, Adam Hayes. He may also have Panda Express to thank for his win. According to Today, back in 2013, when Jon Rahm was just an 18-year-old sophomore attending Arizona State University on a golf scholarship, he tweeted a photo of the message he found in a fortune cookie from Panda Express. It read, “Your talents will be recognized and suitably rewarded.” That fortune inspired Rahm to caption the tweet with, “I am gonna win the masters!” Good call.
On his Twitter profile, Jon Rahm lists his sponsors, including Callaway, Rolex, and Mercedes-Benz. If Rahm’s not also sporting a Panda Express logo somewhere on his gear at his next tournament, someone’s not doing their job.
