I know what you’re wondering. What the heck is the European Gull Screeching Championship? Think of it as Europe’s version of a hog calling contest, except the competitors are imitating seagulls.

According to DutchReview, the European Gull Screeching Championship was established in Belgium five years ago. The competition’s founder, Claude Willaert, felt strongly that seagulls were misunderstood so he created the event as a way of showing the birds some respect.

This year’s edition of the European Gull Screeching Championship was held in Adinkerke, Belgium. It was all over when Jarmo Slutter from Eindhoven in the neighboring Netherlands stepped up to the microphone.

The 21-year-old said he entered the contest on a lark at the urging of his friends. He never expected to win, but win he did. Slutter’s seagull squawk is simply sublime. He even looks the part, as you’ll see below.
