North Carolina DMV Changes Begin This Month
Just thinking about going to the DMV bums most of us out. As a general rule, no matter what you’re there for you have to wait in a line, sometimes for hours. The dread is real! The North Carolina DMV has some changes that are going into effect starting today and they’re supposed to help wait times.
According to WCNC, beginning today, May 1, 2023, you will only be able to schedule appointments at the DMV in the morning. There will be no appointments in the afternoon. Walk-ins will now be how the majority of people are served. Part of the reason for fewer appointments is because of the number of no-shows.
Another change is that starting in June, there will be Saturday office hours at various DMV offices around the state. You’ll need to check online to see if there’s a DMV location open near you on Saturdays. I think this is a plus! Many people can’t handle DMV issues online and can’t go to a physical location during the week due to work.
Speaking of online, you should always check the website prior to going to a DMV location. There’s a good chance you can handle your business on their website. Wayne Goodwin, NC DMV Commissioner, told WCNC that 20% of people standing in line at the DMV could have handled their business online. And I think most of us are all about skipping the lines!
If you do need to physically go to a DMV location, make sure you have all the appropriate paperwork you need. For instance, insurance documents must be printed out. You can’t show proof of insurance via an email or app on your phone. There is nothing worse than spending hours at the DMV only to find out you need specific paperwork. UGH! I’ve been there and it’s a pain, so make sure you have all your paperwork in hand.
You can now also go anywhere in the state and make an appointment or walk in, you don’t have to handle business in the county in which you live. This gives us all more options! However, you should still check online prior to going to any location. You can save time by doing things online like renewing your driver’s license.
In addition to the schedule changes, the North Carolina DMV has also hired more employees, which will hopefully reduce line times at offices around the state. You can find out more about the new changes and get some important information prior to going to a location here. Knowledge is power! Find out stuff before wasting your time waiting in line.
REMINDER! These changes take effect at Driver License Offices statewide starting tomorrow!
