Maryland Has A Big Problem With Nearly 800,000 License Plates
Many states have websites on their license plates. For example, Pennsylvania’s license plates have “visitPA.com” written across the bottom in order to attract potential tourists. The state of Maryland also put a website on its license plates a few years ago. Unfortunately, the that’s not working out so well.
According to WBAL-TV, the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration has confirmed that there’s a problem with a web address printed on nearly 800,000 license plates between 2012 and 2016. The plates in question commemorated the bicentennial of the War of 1812 with the URL address “www.starspangled200.org.” Instead of leading users to a non-profit organization dedicated to raising money for bicentennial-related projects and events, it goes to a gambling website based in the Philippines. Oops. Sounds like someone forgot to renew the domain.
The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration says its working on a solution because it has no affiliation with the gambling website. But maybe it should. Hear me out. Why doesn’t Maryland just turn their toll booths into slot machines? They could start by raising the price of the toll a little. I mean, the state could probably use the money, right? Then, every time someone drives through, they’d have a chance to win a jackpot. Honestly, I don’t know why I don’t run for office.
