19 Guinness World Records Set In North Carolina, Including Some Rather Bizarre Ones

I remember the days of buying the Guinness Book of World Records at the book fair in elementary school. And it’s still going strong. There are records for literally anything you can think of. And hundreds of things you never imagined. In fact, there are over 40,000 records currently held. So it makes sense that some of the Guinness World Records would have been set in North Carolina. I’ve compiled a few of those for your enjoyment, and boy are they entertaining. Some of these records include animals, others that occurred at sporting events, and other random activities you didn’t know people actually did. One thing is for sure, you’ll be entertained!

• Most Tricks in A Minute By A Guinea Pig

  I’m not even sure I could do 16 tricks in a minute. But a Guinea Pig from High Point, named Coco did just that with the help of owner Gwen. Gwen knows over 70 tricks and is a certified Trick Guinea Pig Champion.

• Largest Playstation 3 Cluster

  I had to consult Google to find out what a Playstation Cluster is. According to Wikipedia it’s a “distributed system computer composed primarily of Playstation 3 video game consoles”. The record was set at NC State University using 8 PS3’s. It was used for research purposes once the record was set.

• Largest Ant Farm

  I’m itching just thinking about this. It’s fitting that Terminix was the organization to create the largest art farm. It’s right here in Charlotte at Discovery Place and is 3 cubic feet. No word on how many ants you can fit in it.
• Farthest Disc Golf Ace

  Share

  An “ace” in disc golf is essentially a hole in one. The farthest one thrown was by Caleb Hall for 611 feet. Caleb a college student, and member of the Professional Disc Golf Association, through the ace on the 14th hole at North Cove Leisure Club in Marion.

• Largest Walk Through Zoo

  Share

  Did you know that the North Carolina Zoo is the largest walkthrough zoo. The Zoo encompasses 810+ hectares and houses more than 1,600 animals. It’s located in Asheboro, NC just an hour and a half drive from both Charlotte and Raleigh.

• Most Sporting Event Flyovers In A Single Pass

  I’m spoiled as NC State, my alma mater and where I return for every home football game, has its own flight crew and flyovers at every game. Most NFL teams don’t even do that. But Carolinas Freedom Foundation and the US Marine Corps were ablate complete 7 flyovers on September 7, 2018 all in the same flight.
• Largest Object Unboxed

  Have you ever seen a box largest enough to fit a Volvo Truck? Not like a pickup truck but an 18-wheeler. One was created and the truck measuring 72 feet was unboxed in Charlotte in 2017. This story gets cuter when you learn that a 4 year old got to be the one to “unbox” the truck.

• Most Children Born To Unseparated Conjoined Twins

  Chad and Eng Bunker, a set of conjoined twins, both married twin sisters and between the two couples 21 children were born. This record was set back in 1868 and I bet this record is safe for the rest of human history.

• Heaviest Fish Caught

  Colleen Harlow caught a 405 pound lemon shark off the coast of Buxton, NC back in 1988.
• Largest Ice Cream Making Lesson

  Have you ever wanted to learn how to make your own ice cream? A record 274 people learned at the Schiele Museum of Natural History in Gastonia in 2015. And no there wasn’t a kitchen large enough. The record was set outside, which leaves me asking the question “Was this ice cream eaten and did it pass health code?”

• Most Goals Scored By A Player In A National Women’s Soccer League Game

  This goal is held simultaneously by two individuals. It was first set in Australia by Samantha Kerr in 2017. But just two years later North Carolina Courage player Kristen Hamilton tied the record at the team’s game in Cary’s WakeMed Soccer Park. And yes the Courage did win that game!

• Fastest Quarter Mile For A Monster Truck

  You know those Monster Trucks that crush cars? Yeah they are strong but just how fast are they? The record for the fastest quarter mile in a monster truck was set in a truck named War Wizard by driver Randy Moore. He went a quarter mile in 13.175 seconds at zMax Dragway.
• Most Vehicles tinted in 8 Hours By A Team

  Why 8 hours? No one knows. Is there a record for 7 hours? I didn’t check. But the 8 hour version was set in Charlotte by a team of 438 people from XPEL, SunStoppers, and Town and Country Ford. They were able to tint 170 vehicles in the 8 hour time span on July 29th, 2019.

• Most Different Beer Brands On Tap

  This is one that is continuous like some of the other records that just take place at a moment in time. If you’re a beer lover in North Carolina you’re sure to find one you will enjoy at Raleigh Beer Garden in, you guessed it, Raleigh. The record was certified in 2015 and the Beer Garden has 203 different breweries on tap with 369 different beers. And in the process of certification, each one was poured as a sample. How do I get that sampling job?

• Most People Hugging Soft Toys Simultaneously

  Not only was this a chance to break a Guinness World Record it was also used as a chance to do good in the community. Students at Smoky Mountain High School in Sylva, NC came together as a group of 835 people to hug stuffed animals. They then donated them to kids in the local community.
• Most Guitar Rotations Around The Body In 30 Seconds

  No not quite like that baseball bat game you often see between innings where a kid gets way too dizzy. Think standing and passing a guitar around your body. How many times do you think you could do that in 30 seconds? The record is 35 times, less than a second per rotation. It was set by Adam Hudson in Raleigh in 2018.

• Longest American Football Pass Caught Between The Legs By A Team of 2

  Down, set, hike. Sort of. I guarantee you’ve heard of one of the two members of this record holding team- former Carolina Panthers starting QB, number one draft pick, and 2015 league MVP Cam Newton. Newton and Garret Niconieko set this record back in July 2019 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. The between the legs pass went for 39 yards.

• Largest Gathering of People Wearing Sweatbands

  No it was’t the 80s, it was 2018. Relay by Republic Wireless set this record with a group of 4,990 people wearing sweatbands in Durham, NC at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Because why not?
• Fishermen Process Whale Caught In Approved Coastal Whaling

  This one, I’m going to give a little disclaimer as it’s the longest that humans know about. It was accomplished by a Cuvier’s Beaked Whale which spent 3 hours and 42 minutes underwater. This took place off the coast of Cape Hatteras and was satellite tracked.
