Mad Keyboard Skills: Florida Teen Is Now Fastest Typist In The World
Did you take a typing class when you were in school? I did in 8th grade. We practiced on electronic typewriters. I still line my fingers up on the “home row.” I’m not sure if any schools still have mandatory typing classes. I know my kids didn’t have to take one. Maybe that’s because their generation was born into a life where keyboards control everything so they’re already pretty good at it.
While typing classes may have gone the way of teaching cursive, at least one teenager is still devoted to perfecting that skill. According to Kotaku, a 16-year-old Florida-based YouTuber who goes by “mythicalrocket” has smashed the record for how many words per minute a person can type. After posting the video online, the teen boasts a score of 300 words per minute. Those are some fast fingers.
Just to put that number in perspective, the average typing speed is about 40 words per minute. People who are really good can usually ramp that up to 60-70 words per minute. So, what does mythicalrocket claim is the secret to their success? “I think the way that I cultivated this speed was through gaming and old Skype/Discord text chats,” they said.
I’m guessing that typing at such lightning speed is easier on a modern laptop than an old-fashioned manual typewriter because you don’t have to push the keys as hard. Do you think you could beat the high score? The new champ used a website called monkeytype. You can see what it looks like in the mythicalrocket’s record-breaking video below.
