What’s The Perfect Temperature For The Office; Many Folks Have An Opinion
Summer is here and the debate begins: what is the perfect temperature for the office. While it depends on what you do for a living, many people have a number in mind in regard to the thermostat. It seems like men and women can’t agree and there’s a ‘temperature war’ happening at offices around the country.
According to Today, the folks that are freezing, mostly women, are hitting TikTok to complain about having to bundle up at work. Some of the ‘cold people’ are even bringing in tiny heaters to place under or near their desk. TikToker @leannp0721 is one of the women that has a heater at her desk. A friend of mine does that! She’ll have a heater going all summer long as she’s always cold.
The Today Show staffers are noticing that many women in the building are bringing coats, sweaters, and jackets to work because they stay cold in the summer. Meanwhile, most of the men in the building prefer the colder temps in the office. I think we need to address clothing in this debate.
Women usually have a ‘summer wardrobe’ that contain cute dresses and short sleeve tops. Usually, men wear suits to work no matter the season, depending on their profession. I’m hot natured and since I’m in my 50’s, those hot flashes creep up at random times. I usually bring a light jacket or shirt with me in summer. At least the beginning of summer. Once the temps hit the 90’s, I don’t get cold unless the thermostat is under 70 degrees.
A study in 2021 published in Nature Journal found that women are three times as likely to be uncomfortably cold in the office during summer. According to a separate study done at USC by associate professor Tom Chang, when room temps warmed up from the 60’s to the 70’s, women’s performance on verbal and math tests increased.
Women are usually smaller than men, so it makes sense that they would be more effected by cold temps. Although women who are dealing with menopause are all about the cooler temps. When I worked at another station in town, the studio was so cold that my hands turned blue! I kept a winter coat at my desk year-round. However, once I hit 50 and the ‘change’ hit, I’m definitely on team ‘Keep It Cold’.
What’s the perfect temperature for you? What would you like your office to set the thermostat to?
@leannp0721 Note: I would have stitched the video, but that option was off. #brrr #womenswinter #cold #office #worklife #spaceheater
