‘The Beer Tan’ Going Viral On TikTok And Experts Say It’s Dangerous
If you’re a Gen X’er, then you probably used baby oil at some point for a deep, dark tan. As a child I looked like the Coppertone kid! My skin would tan perfectly, and I never burned. Same in my teens and into my 30’s. I’d get a dark tan and I loved it! In my late 30’s, I started using SPF 30 sunscreen, and I’d still get dark. Now that I’m in my 50’s, my skin is showing the effects of all those tanning years. I have sunspots all over my hands, arms and legs. If I go to the pool or beach now, I have to use SPF 30 and reapply a few times. There’s a ‘tanning trend’ on TikTok that’s going viral and it’s flat out stupid.
According to Metro, folks on TikTok are now getting a ‘beer tan.’ TikTokers aren’t drinking the beer but pouring it all over themselves for the ‘best tan ever.’ Videos on the social media site show people ‘showering’ their skin in beer while out in the sun. It’s a ‘cheap way’ to tan quicker as beer costs less than sunscreen. Some people are using the beer along with sunscreen, while others skip the SPF completely.
Different kinds of beer are being used in different clips on TikTok. Using beer not only makes your skin all sticky, you’ll also smell like a bar. Oh, by the way, it’s also dangerous! Not using sunscreen will leave you vulnerable to a sunburn. In addition, a bad sunburn can also lead to sun poisoning, which is not a good time.
In the 1970’s and 1980’s, we didn’t have the knowledge that we do now in regard to sun damage. Since we have lots of information now about sun damage, it’s just plain stupid to try this ‘beer tan.’ It’s also a waste of good beer!
Many dermatologists are weighing in on the trend, stating how dangerous it is as lack of sunscreen can lead to a higher risk of skin cancer. My dad just had surgery to remove a spot of skin cancer just under his eye. It’s not the first spot he’s had removed. In the 70’s and 80’s, he was outside lots playing tennis. He never wore sunglasses or sunscreen and now he’s paying the price.
Trust the older folks! Using beer now for a great tan will lead to skin issues later.
