Restored Video Shows What A Day At The Beach Looked Like In The 1920s
I’ve often thought that I was born about 70 years too late. Had I been born in the first decade of the 20th Century, I could have experienced and appreciated the 1920s. It was a fascinating time for music, art, literature, the emergence of movies and radio, as well as some of the greatest moments in sports history. I could have seen Babe Ruth play!
Alas, I was born in the 1970s. At least I missed two World Wars and the Great Depression. However, thanks to the miracle of YouTube, I can travel back in time to see what life was like a hundred years ago. Since it’s summer, I thought it would be fun to take a look at how people enjoyed the beach in the 1920s.
The footage in the video below has been restored, colorized, and had sound added through the use of AI technology. It includes clips of happy seaside vacationers in Palm Beach, Florida; the Netherlands; Vancouver, Canada; Atlantic City, New Jersey; Biarritz, France; and Odessa, Ukraine.
The first thing you notice is how dressed up everyone is on the beach. Many people are fully-clothed in the styles of the day. Even those in their “swimming costumes” might still have their street shoes on in the sand. I can guarantee I won’t be bringing my wingtips to the Outer Banks in July.
Parasols and bathing caps were very popular with the ladies back in the “Roaring Twenties.” One woman is even seen wearing her pearls and applying a fresh coat of lipstick on the beach. Those were different times indeed. But, overall, people seem to be enjoying themselves by the ocean. So I guess some things haven’t changed at all.
